what is an architect and why use one

Architects can only describe themselves as such if they are registered with the Architects Registration Board (I am listed at architect067727B ), following completion of a seven year academic course combined with work placements. After qualification, architects undertake a continuous programme of training to maintain their skill level, and must also carry suitable professional indemnity insurance.

Well designed buildings  should not only look good but should also be durable, maintainable and function correctly. Good design is a synthesis of art and science, poetry and engineering.

Architects are uniquely trained to consider and bring together both the aesthetic and practical aspects of buildings and spaces. In preparing a design,  an architect will think about the sense of flow and light, balance and proportion, the linking of internal and external spaces etc. At the same time,  pragmatic and technical issues to do with function, structural and constructional design, and constraints relating to budget, planning and building regulations will be addressed and resolved.

Building work is complex and expensive and clients need good advice to make the right choices and to ensure that they proceed with a design scheme that meets their needs and which they will be happy with on its completion. An architect will generally be the person best able to provide this advice and support, and thereby add most long term value to a property.
